What to expect when staying at the Bissell House
PAYMENT: Reservations are confirmed upon receipt of your deposit, a one night deposit for one night's stay or 50% of your total reservation for longer stays. This may appear as two separate charges on your credit card statement. Any remaining balance will be collected upon arrival so that we do not delay you upon your departure. We do not accept cash payments or offer hourly rates. In addition, we take a security deposit and copy of photo id upon arrival.
LUGGAGE: As we are a bed and breakfast inn and not a hotel, please note that there is no bellhop on the premises to assist with luggage. Currently, all guest rooms are on the second and third floor.
NO SMOKING: We are a completely non-smoking Inn for health and fire hazard purposes. The city of South Pasadena recently adopted a non smoking ordinance for all public places. Guests who violate the non-smoking policy of the inn will be automatically charged a minimum of $400.00 to return the room to non-smoking status. Reservations at our Inn signify guest understanding and agreement of Inn policies. If you do smoke, we ask that you do so street side so as to not impact other guests.
PARKING: One parking space inside our property is included for you. Should you need more parking, our side of the street on Columbia is available safely without a Pasadena nightly pass. With regards to onsite parking, currently, due to mandatory regulated watering restrictions, our sprinklers come on Fridays 6-7PM. Please park on gravel near Orange Grove Ave exit to avoid water spots. If you drive an oversize vehicle please park on the south side of the street regardless, in front of the house, as it is difficult to navigate our narrow driveway.
BREAKFAST: With the exception of major holidays we offer a 9am seated ovo-lacto vegetarian (eggs and dairy but no meat) hot breakfast in the dining room where Albert Einstein was once feted by Anna Bissell McKay. Self serve continental breakfast is available for early risers by advance RSVP. Please confirm your breakfast plans with us upon arrival so we can be prepared and reduce waste. Additional breakfasts are $25 per person and require 24 hour advance request if you wish to have a family member of friend join you. We cannot guarantee accommodation, especially on weekends when we are often sold out.
DESSERT TEA: Also included is our round-the-clock “afternoon tea table” with a daily sweet treat set out late afternoon, a spacious downstairs living room & library, and use of pool, gardens and grounds. Friends and family may also join you for our self serve teatime for additional rates of $6.00 per person with 24 hour advance notice to the inn.
REFRESHMENT IN ROOMS: Please treat our home as you would your own. If you choose to take refreshment in your room(s) we ask that you take care. We are an independent small business. Spills are costly and time intensive to rectify. No cooking of any kind is allowed in any of the rooms. We also ask that you do not consume red wine in the guest rooms. A fee will be assessed for any extraordinary cleaning charges.
INTERNET: We have complimentary wifi capability throughout the house and grounds. We will provide you with the password when you arrive.
POOL: Should you wish to enjoy our outdoor un-heated pool, children are required to wear swim diapers. We do not offer use of an outdoor spa tub at our property.
PLUMBING: Victorian Era pipes were smaller in diameter than modern day ones. For this reason, we request you NOT use anything other than toilet paper in the toilet. No Kleenex, Q tips, “flushable wipes” and certainly no feminine hygiene products. Thank you.
CHILDREN: For safety reasons and as a courtesy to fellow guests, we ask that parents be attentive to their children's conduct. Children must be monitored and attended to. At no time should children ever be left alone at any time, indoors or out. We also have a no running, no screaming policy inside the house.
GRATUITY: Many people inquire as to etiquette surrounding the topic of tipping. Tipping is optional but appreciated by our hardworking housekeepers. Please know that your room attendants vary from day to day. Tips are not pooled.
PETS: While we wish we could, we are sorry but we cannot accept pets. We make up for this by supporting animal welfare work both personally and professionally. From time to time we may have a visiting family member's hypoallergenic pet on site. If this is a concern for you please let us know prior to making your reservation.
CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT: Check in time is from 3-6pm. We will notify you of special instructions regarding any late check ins. Please respect quiet hours between 10pm and 7am. Check out time is 11:00 am, although you may enjoy the common areas for an extended time if desired.
