JPL's beginnings can be traced to the mid-1930s, when a few Caltech students and amateur rocket enthusiasts started tinkering with rockets. After an unintended explosion occurred on campus, the group and its experiments relocated to an isolated area next to the San Gabriel Mountains, the present-day site of JPL.

Built in 1931, the historic 3,029-seat Pasadena Civic Auditorium is one of the most revered performance halls in the nation. The Civic has played host to Broadway musicals, world class ballet, symphony orchestras and celebrity speakers as well as the Prime Time Emmy Awards, and the People's Choice Awards.

The Gamble House is the most prominent example of Arts and Crafts architecture in Pasadena, but the homes in Bungalow Heaven illustrate the way ordinary families of the period lived. On April 10, 2008, the Bungalow Heaven Historic District was listed by the United States Department of the Interior in the National Register of Historic Places. As a result of the listing, Bungalow Heaven has also been listed in the California Register of Historical Resources.

There’s a little-known but wonderful trail along the east side of the Arroyo Seco through Sycamore Park and the golf course area. It hugs the hillside and emerges into the four acre nature park recently established by South Pasadena, just south of the golf course driving range near the York Street Bridge.

FENYES MANSION TOURS Public tours every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 12:15 pm. The Fenyes Mansion was designated a Pasadena Cultural Heritage Landmark in 1965 and a California Point of Historical Interest in 1993. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
